Scientists have developed a new solid-state battery design that could significantly increase the range and reduce charging times of electric vehicles. Lab tests show the prototype cells offer higher energy density and improved safety compared with current lithium-ion batteries.
If successfully commercialised, the technology could help overcome two of the biggest barriers to wider EV adoption. Several major car manufacturers have already expressed interest in licensing the research.
Industry experts estimate it may take three to five years before the batteries appear in production vehicles.
